Greeting- 2 minutes
Teacher to Students- Listen & Repeat (some or all)
Hello, Hi, Hey, Howdy, G’day, Good Morning, Hola, Aloha, Bon Jour, Bon Dia, Bon Journo, Ni Hao, Konnichiwa, Anyohaseyo, Sambaino, Kiola, Selamat Pagi (am) (pm-Siang), Shalom, Jambo, Asalamalekum, Zzdrastvet-yah, Namaste.

Janken 4’s- Warm-Up/Review/Conversation Skills Practice- 5 minutes
ALT/HRT- Janken and do the conversation first together, then with a few students to practice/demonstrate.
Students- Each student Janken and Converse with 3 others in groups of 4
Blackboard
  • W)I can swim. 
  • L1)I can swim, too. 
  • L2)I can’t play soccer.
Chant- I Can Swim- Can You Swim?- 5 minutes
Blackboard-
  • I can swim. clap-clap X2 Can you swim, too? clap-clap-clap
  • O-Yes, I can. clap-clap X2. I can swim, too. clap-clap-clap 
  • X-No, I can’t. clap-clap X2. I can’t swim. clap-clap-clap 
Textbook- page 27. Use the nine pictures for vocabulary.
ALT- First, ask the students if they know the vocabulary for the pictures on page 27.  Then, introduce the chant and lead singing.
Students- Tell the vocabulary you know. Sing together.
HRT- Suggest ideas for vocabulary on page 27 to students in Japanese.

Activity 2- Interview- 15 minutes
Textbook- page 27
Blackboard-
  • W) Can you play the piano?
  • L) (No, I can’t.) Yes, I can. My name is Ken.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate the activity- Play Janken, Winner asks, “Can you OO?” until the other student says “Yes, I can. My name is XX.” Winner then writes the other student’s name into his/her book under the picture.
Students- Watch & listen to the demonstation, then tell the meaning in Japanese. All standing with textbooks, make pairs, play Janken, & do the conversation.  When all pictures have a name, write your name on the blackboard and sit down.

Prepartation for Show and Tell Activity- 10 minutes
Textbook- page 28
ALT/HRT- Ask students to draw pictures in their textbooks on page 28. In the top section students draw activities they CAN do; in the bottom section, activities they CAN’T do.
Students- Draw pictures in your textbook, page 28.

Alternate Activity- Find 3 People- 6-10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W) I can play tennis. Can you play tennis?
  • L1) Yes, I can. I can play tennis.
  • L2) No, I can’t. I can’t play tennis.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate activity- Pairs Janken, Winner asks “Can you OO?” and Loser answers.  GOAL is to find 3 people with YES (or NO) answers. Students then return to their seats and sit down.

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes
(Present common mistakes to the whole class. Write the mistaken point on the blackboard, and ask if anybody can see the mistake.) Or-
HRT to Students, in Japanese:
-What did we talk about today? 
-Were there some words you already knew?
-Did you learn any new words?
-What was fun or interesting?
-What was difficult?
-How can we make that easier next time?

Closing- 1 minute
Students: ‘Thank you! Good bye!’
Teachers: ‘You’re welcome! Good bye!’
